On the occasion of the International Day of Sign Languages, Dr. Rafiq Najam, Deputy Secretary General for Organization of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, said that Islam teaches equality and that persons deprived of the ability to hear are as much members of society as anyone else.

He said governments, welfare organizations, movements, political and social groups, and affluent individuals have a moral and humanitarian responsibility to facilitate the education and training of persons with hearing impairments and enable their full participation in collective development by providing them with appropriate technological tools and support.

Dr. Rafiq Najam noted that modern science and technology have significantly advanced the use of sign language, and its scope can be further expanded through the attention and support of philanthropists and resourceful individuals.

He said it was encouraging that Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, Founder and Patron-in-Chief of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, has initiated various educational and training projects for people of all ages and walks of life, including children, women and senior citizens. On his special instructions, an online program has also been introduced to provide religious education to persons with hearing impairments. With the assistance of sign-language experts, the program is making Islamic education accessible to people with hearing disabilities.

He emphasized that whether it is religious or secular education, educating persons with hearing impairments through sign language is an essential need of the present era.
