Central President of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Qazi Zahid Hussain, has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the horrific fire that broke out at the Gul Plaza Shopping Center in Karachi, declaring it a national tragedy.
Qazi Zahid Hussain stated that reports of the loss of precious human lives, injuries to many individuals, and dozens still missing in this tragic incident are extremely alarming. He said that as a result of this devastating fire, hundreds of families have been directly affected, while the livelihoods of thousands of people have been indirectly destroyed. These families will continue to face severe financial hardship for a long time. He added that not only the building was reduced to ashes, but the means of livelihood of thousands of people were also burned to the ground.
He further stated that the absence of proper fire safety arrangements and ventilation systems in this major commercial center, comprising more than 1,200 shops, is clear evidence of negligence. He demanded transparent and impartial investigations into the incident, identification of those responsible, and that they be brought to justice.
Qazi Zahid Hussain also called for immediate financial assistance for the families of the deceased, provision of proper medical treatment for the injured, and an emergency relief package for the affected traders. He emphasized that in a mega city like Karachi, the immediate and strict enforcement of effective fire safety laws for the protection of commercial centers has become unavoidable.
He urged the Sindh government to conduct an immediate safety audit of all commercial buildings and to give top priority to the protection of human lives.
